The Earle & Welford Families       of Yorkshire, England               1268 - 1911

Earle Family of County Durham

Note

This County section has been added to record some of the life-events of Barnabas Earle's eldest son, Richard Earle who like his father before him would find himself living a long way from his place of birth in adult life. The decendants of Richard's four sons Francis, William, Richard and John ensured the Earle family line continued in the County of Duram throughout the 19th Century.

Canon Albert Earle in his Antiquarian Notes & Papers dated 1899 wrote of the Rev Charles Stratford Earle as follows: -

"The following is a copy of a letter given me Aug 1899 by the vicar of Bolton, Mr Mallinder, in reply to an enquiry concerning pedigree from a Rev. Charles Stratford Earle near Bath. The said Charles Stratford Earle (in pedigree of his I have seen) assumes this son Richard named below, of which we have no record, so attaches himself to our family.

My Dear Sir,

I have seen Mr Thomas Earle this afternoon when he placed your letter in my hands requesting me to write to you. Thomas Earle was the son of William and Mary Earle of Uckerby Mill. He was born in 1764 and in 1794 in his 30th year married Elizabeth Goodburne of Middleton Tyas and had by her issue Mary born 1796 and William born 1797. Mr Thomas Earle in 1798 fell ill and died in 1803 in the 39th year of his age. He left his widow then in her 26th year. It is said that she married as her second husband a Mr Swinburn by whom she had two sons. It is just possible that the first William Earle b1731 d1817 may have had a son Richard before he came to Uckerby perhaps born 1761

                                                Believe me

                                                Yours very truly

                                                D Mallinder"

The information contained in the above letter transcript is largely correct. The Rev Charles Stratford Earle is descended from Richard Earle (latterly of Weardale) and there is a family link. Richard however is the son of Barnabas and Elizabeth Earle (born when the family lived at Cawood) and is not a son of William and Mary Earle before they moved to Uckerby Mill as suggested by D Mallinder. William and Barnabas are half-brothers both born at Boroughbridge to Francis Earle, Millwright
