Note
This Welford family tie took some sorting out, but this appears to be the situation given all the evidence
Joseph Crosby was born at Normanby in 1826 about two years before George Welford married Mary Crosby at Fylingdales. The 1841 census shows Joseph, with the Welford surname, living at Ridge Lane in Roxby where he is no doubt learning the skills of husbandry as noted on his marriage certificate. It seems probable that Joseph is the son of George and Mary and just happened to be born before his parents married
The 1851 census shown Joseph and his young family farming at Coquet Nook in nearby Lythe and continuing to use the Welford surname though judging by the birth registration of his son, George in 1850 he was still legally a Crosby
The Joseph Welford (joiner & cartwright) also married to an Elizabeth living at Easington in the 1851 census is therefore the son of George Welford, senior and not to be confused with with this Joseph the probable son of George Welford, junior

This wonderful contemporary photograph taken of the Tancred Arms in Hawnby when the Welfords were in occupation of the Inn shows the adjoining house (right) where Robert Patten and his wife, Margaret (nee Welford) lived. Perhaps the lady in the foreground is Margaret with her son Isaac in her arms and Georgina at her side. Her eldest daughter, Hilda in the light couloured dress could be the little girl stood in the doorway of their house
The lady stood in the doorway of the Inn could also be George's wife, Margaret Welford no doubt curious at the photographer pointing his lens towards them on what must have been a warm summers day given the open windows letting in the fresh air

Helmsley County Court - Friday 14th October 1892
His Honour Judge Turner held a court at Helmsley yesterday when Messrs. Soulby, spirit merchants of Malton sought to recover the sum of £10 odd of Mrs Welford of Hawnby. Mr Jennings, solicitor of Kirbymoorside appeared for the plaintiff. The defendant is the widow of the late George Welford of the Tancred Arms, Hawnby and according to the evidence of Mr Thomas Hornby, a traveller of the plaintiffs, the account was for spirits, &c supplied to the defendants husband. The defendant succeeded her deceased husband in April last year. Mr Hornby stated that when he visited the house on certain occasions it was well furnished and the defendant promised that his firm should be paid the account. The defendant now stated to his Honour that there were no effects for anything after she last paid £18 10s rent. His honour gave a verdict in favour of the defendant, with costs
