The Earle & Welford Families of Yorkshire, England 1268 - 1911
The Earle & Welford Families       of Yorkshire, England               1268 - 1911

Descendants of George Welford [1768-1850]

Note

The following family information follows the descendants of George Welford born in Brotton in 1768 and who died at Newton Mulgrave in 1850. George was truely a family man who it was noted in the Whitby Panorama & Monthly Chronicle was father to 19 children and grandfather of 30 when he married his third wife Mary Petch in 1828

Like his ancestors, George was a staunch Catholic and many records for him and his family can be found in the Ugthorpe registers recorded by the priests at the little Catholic chapel located at that place. There are also instances where baptism and marriage records appear in both the Catholic registers and the main parish records perhaps satisfying Protestant families marrying into the Catholic Welford 'dynasty' or where the church authorities were insisting on ceremonies taking place in the 'true' faith of the country

This section is relatively short as it only documents the life events of George and his three wives. His childrens details have their own section as together there would simply have been too much information to manage and digest in one section

St Mark's Church, Marske in Cleveland

Baptism – 7th September 1788

Mary daughter of George Welford, labourer of Brotton

Note

This baptism is a little confusing given George and Elizabeth, who married six months earlier, also christened a daughter with the same name eight years later. Clearly this first Mary was still alive and well at the time as she is recorded as marrying at Marske in 1809 when 21 years of age. Interestingly the Marske Parish register names her as 'of this parish' when she married when George and his family had been living at Greena in Newton Mulgrave for many years.

That Mary was born illegitimately to another woman doesn't seem likely as the Parish baptism register for Marske mentions either just the father's name or if born out of wedlock, the mother's name with a note of the illegitimacy made. It therefore seems likely Elizabeth was pregnant when she and George married.

I have added Mary to George's family tree, but have questioned her mothers name purely to highlight the inconsistancy in the two children with the same Christian names.

Marriage – 23rd August 1817

George Welford & Mary Husband

Note

In many of the family trees found on the various ancestry websites, this marriage has been incorrectly attributed to George's son living at Ridge Lane, Roxby. The marriage notice in the Whitby Panorama & Monthly Chronicle dated 1828 (see below) and the Will and Probate note for George Welford of Roxby dated 1879 shows that Mary Husband was married to this George Welford of Newton Brows, his first wife having died at the age of 49 as noted above

Burial – 11th January 1827

Mary Welford

Note

This burial is attributed to the death of George's daughter in many family trees and Welford family histories viewed. However, for George to marry his third wife a year later in 1828 this is more likely to be his second wife's passing than that of his daughter

Whitby Panorama & Monthly Chronicle

Marriage - 16th September 1828

At Danby, by the Rev. Jos. Duck, Mr Geo. Welford of Newton Brows, farmer to Miss Mary Petch, of Fryup. The bridegroom is father to 19 children and grandfather to 30
