The Earle & Welford Families of Yorkshire, England 1268 - 1911
The Earle & Welford Families       of Yorkshire, England               1268 - 1911

Descendants of John Welford [1758-1838]

Note

Many of the Welford family trees found on Family History websites have connected this John Welford as the son of Ralph & Hannah Dobbin of the Parish of Brotton baptised in 1761. However my own research has determined Ralph & Hannah Welford's son, John Welford remained in Brotton where he ran his butchers business until his death in 1825. See the Brotton section for further details.

So the question remains about the ancestry of this John Welford living at Hinderwell in the early 19th Century. A clue lies in the Hinderwell Parish marriage records for the year 1785 describing John as being 'Master Mariner of Whitby' This is also repeated on the memorial inscription found on his grave stone in the churchyard at Hinderwell which again describes John as a 'Master Mariner' The gravestone also notes that John died in 1838 aged 79 establishing a date of birth in 1758/9. A final clue can be found in the Borthwick Institute Archives who hold a copy of John and Hannah's marriage allegation naming William Welford a farmer of Dunsley acting as surety when the marriage license was obtained.

Given this information it seems highly likely this John Welford is linked to the Welford's living at Dunsley, near Whitby whose family records appear in the Whitby and Lythe parish registers where they are invariably noted as farmers, butchers and sailors. And indeed on 7th May 1758 a John Welfit son of Robert Welfit a farmer from Dunsley was baptised at Whitby.

Whether the Dunsley Welfords are connected to the ancestors of Ralph & Hannah Welford of Brotton remains to be established.

Please feel free to contact me with your requests or questions, or if anything you find conflicts with your own research. I would also welcome your help if you think you can add to my collection with any of your own findings.

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to contact me in the two years since this website was created and for all the interesting and wonderful information you have provided. I regulary receive messages from all corners of the world showing just how far the family have spread over the years and I really look forward being able to assist with your queries where I can.

Do you have any old photographs of Earle and Welford ancestors tucked away in your albums? If so I would really love to hear from you. Perhaps you would allow them to be added to this website as its so much better when you have a face to go with a name.

Remember new material is constantly being added to the website so do come back soon and see what's new!
