The Earle & Welford Families       of Yorkshire, England               1268 - 1911

Earle Family of Cumberland

Note

The records included in this section are those of John Earle born at Uckerby Mill in parish of Bolton-on-Swale in 1759 and Alice, his wife who having spent their early years in Yorkshire between the villages of Middleton Tyas and Kirby Ravensworth eventually settled at Warwick Bridge in Cumberland about the year 1797.

A second, earlier family of Henry Earl (father John) & Ann Stephenson with roots in Cumberland would see their descendants head south to Sheffield in Yorkshire and their records can be found in the Sheffield Parish section on this website.

I have read a story from Patricia Earl that this latter family is perhaps related to the Hull Earles, though Henry and Ann pre-date the move of the Earle family from York to Hull by several decades. It is more likely if there is an early connection to Yorkshire it is perhaps with the York Earles.

At Carlise 19th August 1813

On which day appeared personally William Earl and George Earl and alleged that John Earl late of Warwick Bridge in the parish of Wetheral in the County of Cumberland and diocese of Carlise, miller deceased, died intestate without making any will (so far as they doth know and believe). That they are the natural and lawful sons and next of kin of the said deceased. Wherefore they prayed letters of administration of all and singular the goods, chattels and credits of the said deceased, to be committed and granted to them, the said William Earl and George Earl of their giving good and sufficient security in that behalf.

The said William Earl and George Earl were then sworn in due form of law to the truth of the premises, and to faithfully administer and to exhibit a full and perfect inventory, and also to render a true and just account, and so forth, when thereunto lawfully required; and that the goods, chattels and credits of the said deceased do not amount in value to the sum of six hundred pounds
